Cheryl Lyons–Schmidt received her associates degree in paralegal studies from Anne Arundel Community College and her bachelor's degree in legal studies from University of Maryland, University College, graduating summa cum laude (top 1 percent of her class). Ms. Lyons–Schmidt attended University of Baltimore School of Law. While in law school, she interned at the Maryland Rules Committee and for the Honorable Judge George Lipman on the Mental Health, Alcoholism and Addiction Committee.

As a paralegal, Ms. Lyons–Schmidt worked for a medical malpractice defense firm, defending doctors against medical malpractice. She then worked as a general practice paralegal, focusing on personal injury, bankruptcies and family law issues.

Ms. Lyons–Schmidt is a member of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Maryland Association for Justice, the American Association for Justice, and the American Bar Association.
